Three Rivers Board Will Hold Public Hearing About 2021 Budget

The Three Rivers Park District Board of Commissioners has scheduled a public hearing about the 2021 general fund budget and operating levy. The public hearing will be held at 5:30 PM Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020. While social distancing measures are in place due to COVID-19, the Three Rivers Park District Board of Commissioners is meeting remotely in order to best ensure the health of Park District staff and the public.

The Unique Plants of Our Restored Prairies

In a job interview we are prepared for the question “What makes you unique?” This is not usually an opportunity to confess weird habits or hobbies during the interview, but instead a chance for us to say what makes us the best candidate for a job. It may seem like a stretch but when it is time for collecting prairie seed, we are seeking plants that fit the job of being unique to supporting diversity and resiliency.

Angela graduated from Minnesota State University—Mankato with degrees in ecology and geography. She has a passion for being outdoors and ensuring conservation of the natural heritage of our lands. As a wildlife biologist at Three Rivers Park District, she enjoys working on a wide range of projects from restoring prairies to pollinator surveys. Outside of work she can be found in the garden where she is in the good company of wonder dog, Sid, and two rented chickens, Cersi Henister and Princess Leialot.

Fire used to be a natural occurrence in many ecosystems, including prairies, savannas and oak woodlands. Because of this, many plants and animals became dependent on or adapted to fires. American Indians also regularly used fire for many reasons, including agricultural and hunting purposes.

John Moriarty is the Senior Manager of Wildlife at Three Rivers Park District and has been with the Park District for 15 years. He has been involved in many of the wildlife restoration efforts and initiated the snake and butterfly efforts. John has led several projects to increase prairie habitat in the Park District. John likes exploring natural areas and looking for all types of plants and animals, but especially turtles.

Giving Wood Ducks a Home in Three Rivers

Working as a biologist for Three Rivers Park District, I often find myself in the parks as the sun starts to rise over the horizon and warm up the landscape below. It is during these times that I am met by the morning chorus of animals that awaken and greet the day with their symphony. It is not hard to be found along the edge of a waterway in Minnesota.

Steven Hogg is the Wildlife Supervisor at Three Rivers Park District and has been working for the Park District for 13 years. After graduating from the University of Alberta with a degree in Environmental and Conservation Biology, he moved to Minnesota to marry his beautiful Minnesota bride. Steven has always had a passion and dedication for wildlife, even when he was young. This passion is what lead him into a career where he strives for the proper orchestration of research, management, and politics to ensure natural resources and wildlife are given a voice. In his spare time, which there is little of with his three kids, Steven likes to farm, hunt, and fish.
