On-site Programs

Let your students discover what life was like for early Minnesota settlers at our recreated 1800s farms and village, complete with costumed interpreters. Choose from interactive hands-on programs, a guided walking tour or our Folkways of the Holidays program.

Site visits are available from April to December. Programs are two hours and begin at 10:00 AM or 12:30 PM. Each two-hour time block includes a brief orientation and can accommodate groups of 10–150 people. We offer a curriculum packet with pre- and post-visit information and activities with each reservation.

• Two adults are free with every 25 students.
• Two-hour program: $6.25 per student ($75 minimum)
• Three-hour program: $8 per student ($100 minimum)
• Four-hour program: $10 per student ($100 minimum)

Preschool
Playful Pioneers - Students will explore our unique historic site by participating in a variety of activities designed to engage their senses.

Grades K-3
Children and Family Life in 1889 - Students will experience what life was like in the Minnesota River Valley during the 19th century through hands-on activities and role-playing.

Grades 1-6
Civil War School Program - Students will learn about Minnesota’s role in the American Civil War by meeting the soldiers, militiamen and the civilians of Minnesota who participated in the War Between the States.

1889 One Room School - Students will experience what a one-room school was like in the late 19th century by role-playing and participating in a hands-on use of the curriculum of 1889.

Folkways of the Holidays School Programs - Students will discover the rich Holiday traditions of many of the cultural and ethnic groups that settled in the Minnesota Valley in the 19th century.

Grades 4-6
Journey to 1857 Minnesota - Stimulate your students to think about different aspects of immigration through a variety of hand-on activities that promote teamwork and the use of problem solving skills.

Grades 7-12 and Adult Groups
Travel over Time - This program is designed for older students and adults and will feature a timeline history of the cultural, environmental and material changes in the Minnesota Valley during the 19th century.

Outreach Programs

Let history come to your classroom! Explore what it was like to come to America as an immigrant, or be a 19th century kid for a day by playing 1800s-style games or doing arithmetic on a slate. Programs are offered throughout the year, depending on staff availability.

• Mileage reimbursement may be charged.
• Groups up to 35 participants: $110 1st hour, $70 each additional hour of same topic
• Groups over 35 participants: $195/hour
• Booth program fee: $150/hour
