Coon Rapids Dam Updates
April 2, 2012
The current pool level behind the Coon Rapids Dam is at elevation 829.7 MSL, which is less than ½ foot below normal pool. The DNR has asked Three Rivers Park District to bring the pool up the final few tenths of a foot to the normal summer pool level ~830.1 MSL. At the direction of the DNR, the pool will be at or near this normal summer pool level year-round in order to maximize the dam’s effectiveness as an invasive species barrier, in particular, a barrier to silver carp.
The Park District and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources have entered into a Joint Powers Agreement between, which enables the MNDNR to rehabilitate and manage the dam as an invasive fish species barrier. The Park District remains responsible for routine maintenance and day to day operation of the dam and retains ownership.
The State of Minnesota entered into a contract to perform the design work and construction engineering for the dam rehabilitation. Last year, the Legislature provided $16 million for the project. The DNR will be replacing the gate system and making other badly needed repairs. The design work will be completed in 2012. Construction will start in 2013 and wrap up in 2014.
