Planning for Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail in Edina
December 17, 2009
The route for Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail through Edina is not yet determined. Under consideration are several alternative trail routes, including routes adjacent to roads and along the Nine Mile Creek corridor. Within Edina, a primary objective of the regional trail is to provide connections to the Edina High School campus and the newly created Edina Promenade near Centennial Lakes.
Currently the Park District and City are kicking off an Environmental Assessment and Community Assessment Team. The findings of these efforts will be forwarded to the City Council and Park District Board of Commissioners for consideration in identifying the preferred regional trail route in early 2010.
Feedback from the community, as well as environmental impact, estimated cost, available public land, impact to private property, schools and commercial areas will play significant roles in determining the preferred regional trail route through Edina.
Environmental Assessment
As part of the assessment process, Three Rivers Park District is completing a volunteer environmental assessment worksheet (EAW). On July 7, 2009, the City of Edina passed a Resolution of Support for the completion of the EAW.
The EAW began in late August and is anticipated to be complete in early 2010. The EAW findings will help determine if any alternative trail routes should be removed from further consideration and will help determine the preferred Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail route through Edina.
See more information on the EAW process and scope.
Community Assessment Team
The Park District is coordinating a Community Assessment Team comprised of representatives from each of the fourteen alternative trail routes under consideration. The Community Assessment Team representatives were nominated by property owners living adjacent the alternative trail routes in early Fall 2009.
The Community Assessment Team role is to identify the constraints and opportunities associated with each route, provide design suggestions/considerations for each route, and will convey information back to their respective route neighbors. The first Community Assessment Team meeting was held December 2, 2009 and subsequent site visits are scheduled through mid-January 2010. Meeting minutes will be available on this website following each meeting.
