November 1, 2009

The Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail is planned to travel through Hopkins, Minnetonka, Edina and Richfield, and eventually connect to the popular Minnesota River Bluffs LRT Regional Trail in Hopkins, Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis, and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington. Hopkins and Minnetonka

The trail segments through Hopkins and Minnetonka are planned for construction in conjunction with Nine Mile Creek restoration work. This work is being coordinated by Nine Mile Creek Watershed District. Phase I of Nine Mile Creek restoration began in November 2009 and includes constructing the regional trail between 11th and 9th Avenues in Hopkins. Phase II is planned for construction in 2010 and includes regional trail construction between 9th Avenue and Highway 169 in Hopkins and Minnetonka.

Richfield

In partnership with the City of Richfield and the Richfield Parkway/66th Street Study, Three Rivers Park District is planning possible routes that would extend the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail east from 12th Ave. S along 76th St. E., north to Diagonal Blvd. and south across Interstate 494. This segment of Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail is planned to provide safe routes to the Mall of America, Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Cedar Point Commons Retail Area, Lake Nokomis, Southdale Mall and the Minnesota River Bluffs LRT Regional Trail.

The east-west segment of the regional trail is planned for construction in conjunction with sewer upgrade and street redesign work along 75th and 76th Streets and Diagonal Boulevard. This work is being coordinated by the Metropolitan Council Environmental Services and is anticipated to begin in 2010.

Edina

The regional trail route through Edina is not yet determined. Three Rivers Park District and the City of Edina are in the process of identifying and assessing several alternative routes including routes adjacent to roads and along the Nine Mile Creek corridor. Within Edina, a primary objective of the regional trail is to provide connections to the Edina High School campus and the newly created Edina Promenade near Centennial Lakes.
