Eastman Nature Center Closed for New Construction
July 20, 2011

Eastman Nature Center in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Dayton, is currently closed to the public. The good news is that it’s only temporary. That’s because the existing inefficient and cramped building is being replaced by a new 13,000-square-foot building on the same site. The new nature center will feature quiet reading and observation rooms, larger classrooms, a much larger exhibit area with wildlife watching, all-new professional exhibits, an open-air deck, a small coffee service, public wi-fi signal, and an after-hours restroom. The new center is expected to open in August of 2012.

“Whether people visit Eastman to take a class or to relax and watch wildlife, I think they’re going to love the new building,” said Commissioner Sara Wyatt, who represents Maple Grove on the Three Rivers Park District Board of Commissioners. “From larger classroom spaces to expanded wildlife exhibits to an open-air deck for bird watching, the new Eastman Nature Center really will have something for everyone.”

During the construction project, all of the great programming and summer camps that guests have come to expect from the staff at Eastman Nature Center will continue to be offered at other Three Rivers Park District locations. Summer day camps, preschool programs, puppet shows, larger events, and school groups will be offered at nearby Fish Lake Regional Park, Maple Grove. Eastman’s popular nature-based weekend programs will be offered at the West Coon Rapids Dam Visitor Center in Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, Brooklyn Park. The visitor center will now be staffed seven days a week.

“Outdoor education is central to the mission of Three Rivers Parks,” said Commissioner Marilynn Corcoran, whose district includes the cities of Champlin and Dayton. “The new Eastman Nature Center will help us build on that strong tradition by providing innovative new spaces to help people of all ages learn about, experience and enjoy the natural world.”

Hiking and biking trails near Eastman Nature Center will remain open with a small detour for access around the closed construction zone. Bikers and hikers can park in the turf overflow lot.  Please obey posted signage and follow detours.
