The Planning Section is charged with planning parks, trails, and associated facilities to meet the needs of today without compromising the ability for future generations to satisfy their own needs. Planning staff work primarily on developing and updating park and trail master plans, securing external funding, acquiring land, coordinating Park District planning efforts with local and regional agencies, and providing long-term planning guidance.
Master Plans
Master plans provide guidance and direction for park/trail improvements, natural resource management, cultural resource protection, and future acquisition as well as park operations and management. Master plans are updated as needed to reflect changing demand, recreation trends, and overall park/trail vision.
A master plan must:
- Maximize benefits associated with regional parks and trails, balancing; potential use levels, experiential quality, local area planning and benefits and non-motorized commuting opportunities.
- Engage and obtain the support of local communities and the interested public through public meetings and open houses.
- Meet the requirements of the Metropolitan Council.
Inholding Acquisition
There are approximately 65 inholdings, unacquired properties, located within the approved master plan boundaries of Park District regional parks and park reserves. The Park District generally acquires inholdings through a willing-seller approach as properties and resources become available. If you own an inholding and are interested in selling or donating your property or learning more about the acquisition process, please contact Kelly Grissman at 763.694.7635.
